Baker University Student Senate failed to meet quorum Tuesday, leaving executive officers responsible for conducting all senate business.
Freshman Claire Frosch represented the student organization WIRE and asked senate for $150 to help fund a concert to raise awareness about bombs being dropped on civilians in areas like Lebanon.
“It’s an organization that changes with each semester-(Associate Professor of Political Science and History) Ryan Beasley’s Global Problems class,” Frosch said. “I know in the past (other classes) set up refugee camps on campus and went on a hunger strike.”
Senate executives agreed to give the organization $150 to cover some of the expenses of putting the project together. Frosch said the event will be held Nov. 29 in Lawrence at Abe & Jake’s Landing.
Senator Amber Hauder said Student Activities Council will be holding its annual Christmas tree lighting Nov. 29, and students can decorate gingerbread men in Harter Union afterward.
Dean of Student Development John Frazier said senate members interested in providing input on the idea for a new residence hall could sign up to be on the student senate focus group.
“There’s been a lot of excitement, and I think it’s a fantastic move for the university,” Frazier said. “We’re going to be looking at opening a new residential facility in the fall 2008.”
Treasurer Michelle Burton questioned Frazier about the idea of a new residence hall.
“Do we have to lose a residence hall,” she asked. “Do we have to tear one down?”
Frazier said input from students would help make such a decision.
“The thing we’re looking at is some of our buildings are 50 and 60 years old and we do things aesthically, as far as new mattresses, painting, lobby furniture and stuff like that,” Frazier said. “But at the end of the day it’s still a 50 or 60- year-old building. That’s why we’d like to have some discussion from the student perspective on those kind of issues.”
President Ryan Boyer reminded senators there will not be a meeting Tuesday because of the Thanksgiving holiday.
