With the long-awaited break just hours away, Baker University’s spring break safety party Tuesday got students thinking about the importance of making good choices while enjoying the week.
Students had the opportunity to enter a drawing to win a $20 dollar gift card to Best Buy by signing a pledge to not drink and drive and could try their luck at walking a straight line wearing the Fatal Vision goggles, which gave the illusion they were intoxicated.
Director of Student Health Services Ruth Sarna has been heading up the event for more than 12 years.
“I care about our students, and I want them to think about what they are doing this spring break, whether they are at home or out with friends,” Sarna said. “I want them to think about keeping themselves safe so they can return to school.”
The age progression program made a repeat appearance, but this time it showed students what they will look like if they use tanning beds. The jazz band preformed, and students also received such handouts as key chains, beach balls and condoms.
Senior Cora Martin said she thinks the event was very important because too many young people drink and drive. Martin said she signed the pledge not to drink and drive.
“I learned I can’t walk straight when I’m impaired,” Martin said. “It made me dizzy and sick.”
Freshman Jason Vitale attended the spring break party and tried the Fatal Vision goggles as well.
“This event gets us all together and reminds us of the dangers of drinking and driving because we are all going to be doing a lot of drinking,” Vitale said.
