Baldwin City residents may soon be a lot healthier, thanks to the advice they received at the Community Wellness Festival.
The festival was held March 31 in Collins Gym. More than 50 different exhibitors showed up to share their health tips with Baker students and the Baldwin City community.
Betty Moles, who was running bone density screenings for Lawrence Memorial Hospital, said the hospital participates in all the health fairs it can.
“We come here to inform people,” she said. “The tests help people get a baseline of where their health is.”
Several different tests were offered to festival-goers, such as cholesterol, vision, blood pressure and fitness.
Amy Seaton, a student at the school of nursing, said she volunteered to come to the festival and give tests to see familiar faces.
“We are required to do four hours of volunteer work each semester at the nursing school,” she said. “This is a fun way to do it since I get to see people I haven’t seen in a while and visit with friends.”
Not all booths offered testing, however. Some were simply informative, such as the American Red Cross booth.
Kristin Tirabassi was representing the Red Cross at the festival, trying to get Baldwin City residents to sign up for Red Cross classes.
“We want to try to bring classes to Baldwin so people don’t have to drive as far,” she said. “But first, we have to have enough people sign up.”
There were also plenty of freebies for all in attendance. People could pick up pens, key chains, granola bars and even free bike helmets.
