Students looking for a little free entertainment during these tough economic times can check out the “Bread & Water” art show in the Holt-Russell Gallery.
The show opened Sept. 10 and runs through Oct. 16. There are 44 pieces, including works from students, faculty members and artists from all across the country.
Art Professor Jen Jarnot said each work relates to bread or water, or a combination of the two.
“When I came up with the theme for this show I was thinking about recent budget cuts that faculty and staff have had to work with during the past year,” Jarnot said in an e-mail. ”The theme relates to what we need in order to survive, our basic necessities of ‘Bread & Water.'”
Jarnot called it an open show, which means every artist or craftsperson who mailed in or dropped off work was automatically entered. The size limitation for all two-dimensional work was a maximum of eight by 10 inches. There were no size limitations of three-dimensional work.
"There is a tremendous variety in the show, from painting, printmaking, photography and drawing, to sculpture and ceramics," Jarnot said.<br/>Jarnot said all the student works came from students enrolled in her Painting II class.Jarnot said all the student works came from students enrolled in her Painting II class.

“I invited (students) to participate because I believe they are ready to begin showing their work in galleries,” Jarnot said. “They are that good.”
Senior Gabi Hart said she has two pieces, a ceramic vessel and a painting of a glass of water, in the art show. Hart said this is not the first time she has had her work displayed in the Holt-Russell Gallery.
“I love to paint,” Hart said. “I was an art major for half of a second, but not really.”
