In just more than a month the Baker University track and field teams will have a chance to showcase what they’ve been practicing this fall and winter in the first indoor meet of the 2010 season.

Head coach Zach Kindler and four NAIA All-Americans will return from a successful 2009 campaign with several new athletes and coaches. Darrin Prince will take over in his first year as an assistant coach. The men’s and women’s teams are expected to work out through the holiday break to prepare for the first indoor meet Jan. 8 at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa.

“We’re a very young team,” Kindler said. “We should have one of the largest teams we’ve had here, but three-fourth’s of it will be freshmen and sophomores.”

Kindler said the men’s team returns success and experience from seniors Kome Okiomah in the 200-meter and 400-meter dash, Aaron Hannon in the multi-events, Brian Korn in the hammer throw and sophomore J.L. Anderson in the hurdles.

“We have a large class with talented guys to fill in spots we’ve been missing,” Kindler said. “We should have a shot at being in the top of the conference.”

On the women’s side, the Wildcats will depend on their youth with the loss of standout All-American Ashlee Miller, who will sit this spring out as a redshirt with a knee injury. Kindler said he will have to look to the underclassmen to step up this year.

“They will really have to work hard to prove themselves to be at the top of the conference,” he said.
