Satirist Roy Zimmerman is working on visiting all 48 “lower” states before Nov. 4, and his next stop is The Lodge.
At 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Zimmerman will share his thoughts on politics, religion and various social issues, when he opens the 2008-2009 Artist and Lecture Series.
Susan Buehler, director of the Artist and Lecture Series, said Zimmerman is a satirical songwriter who plays guitar and sings. She said satirists usually poke fun at serious issues to get their message out.
"They kind of get their point across by not standing on a podium and screaming at people," Buehler said.
Buehler said she first heard of Zimmerman from Assistant Professor of Psychology Wendi Born.Buehler said she first heard of Zimmerman from Assistant Professor of Psychology Wendi Born.
Buehler said she first heard of Zimmerman from Assistant Professor of Psychology Wendi Born.
Born said she was at a teaching convention learning how to use YouTube.com as an in-class tool when she came across some of Zimmerman’s material. She has used some of his songs as teaching tools in her classes.
Senior Jessica Lenhart, member of the series planning committee, said the performance could cause an interesting perspective spin.
Buehler said Zimmerman’s music has no real focus, but he uses a wide variety of issues, such as creationism and marriage. She said he covers all issues pretty equally.
“It’s always a feeling like, ‘OK folks, here’s the problem, now what are you going to do to solve it,'” Buehler said.
Lenhart said Zimmerman would be a great addition to the Artist and Lecture lineup.
“It’s always fun to have a comedy act who brings in music,” Lenhart said.
Buehler said the show may count toward the recital credits music students must receive. Regardless, she said it offers musical merit that students should encounter.
“We should embrace it in the same way we would the concert pianist,” Buehler said.
Born said she hopes Zimmerman’s humor and catchy tunes will encourage a different way of thinking about the issues he talks about.
Buehler said having the performance at The Lodge will be a little different, but she thinks it’s the best location because of the intimate setting and acoustics.
Lenhart said this location will be interesting. It will be more laidback and students, as well as the Baldwin City community, will enjoy themselves.
Buehler said Zimmerman will arrive early and visit a few classes that are focused on some of the issues he writes about. He also will play in the cafeteria on Thursday.
As for Thursday night's performance, Baker students get in free, adult tickets are $15, and children's tickets are $10.As for Thursday night's performance, Baker students get in free, adult tickets are $15, and children's tickets are $10.
