Mabee Hall was filled with information about different majors at 11 a.m. Tuesday for the first Majors Fair.
The fair, organized by the Career Development Center, was set up so students could come and learn about all the different majors Baker has to offer. Professors from each major were on hand to answer any questions students had about majors and most were dressed for the pirate-themed event.
The only things missing from the fair were students looking for a major.
Some students, mostly male athletes, attended the fair. But for the most part, students were not present at the event.
While the idea of the majors fair is great, it would be better to have it in the fall, or even during Wildcat Welcome Week so that younger students, especially freshmen and sophomores, can learn more about majors at BU before the semester starts.
And you can’t leave the upperclassmen out of the mix. Although most juniors and seniors have already declared a major, the same idea could be used for those looking for a minor.
Faculty and students who were on hand at the fair to answer questions just stood around waiting for students to walk in the door and wasted their time answering two or three students’ questions during the two-hour time block set aside for the fair. And most students went up to a table based on the creative decorations or the candy that adorned the table.
While the CDC did a great job of marketing the event to the Baker campus, it would have been more ideal to do this around a time when students are choosing their classes.
Next year, try to organize the event to coincide with an enrollment period, or the beginning of a semester.Next year, try to organize the event to coincide with an enrollment period, or the beginning of a semester.
