The Baker University football team had a chance to win Saturday’s game against William Jewell College in regulation, but the Wildcats needed overtime to pull out the 12-9 victory.

Trailing 9-3 with 2:33 left in the fourth quarter, freshman Jake Morse led the team down the field to tie the game at 9-9 with 10 seconds remaining.

All the Wildcats needed was an extra point conversion from freshman Jared Morss to take a 10-9 lead and sneak out with a road victory. It would not be that easy for BU, though. Morss missed the extra point attempt and the game went into overtime.

In the defensive battle that the game was, William Jewell chose to let its defense take the field first in overtime. The Wildcats drove down to the 6-yard line before being forced into a fourth-and-goal situation.

Despite Morss missing the extra point attempt at the end of regulation, head coach Mike Grossner sent him out for a field goal to try to take a 12-9 advantage. Morss made the kick and the Baker defense took the field needing to hold William Jewell to a field goal to extend the game. The defense had other plans, though.

William Jewell fumbled the ball at the 7-yard line and senior Charleston DeLa Cruz recovered the ball to seal the win for the Wildcats.

“A win is a win,” Morse said. “You know Jared Morss, the kicker, he came back after missing the extra point and nailed a field goal in overtime, which was very important. He didn’t lull over what had happened at the end of regulation and was able to come back in overtime and make a kick. Then, the defense came in and did a great job of getting the stop, forcing the turnover and sealing the deal for us.”
