The Baker University women’s soccer team is moving on to the next round of the national tournament after beating McKendree University 2-1 in its NAIA National Championship opening round on Saturday in Lebanon, Ill.
McKendree scored quickly in the first half after less than two minutes of play.
“I thought we came out with a couple jitters but once we got about 20 minutes into the game, we got back to our old self,” head coach Nate Houser said.
Jordan Dolbin, Baker Orange staff member, tied the game 1-1 with 12 minutes of play left in the first half of the match.
With about 10 minutes left in the match, Dolbin scored again, giving the Wildcats a 2-1 win against McKendree and a spot in the NAIA round of 16 in Decatur, Ala.
“They are very excited to get to show the country what we’re really about,” Houser said. “To finally be on the national stage, and get Baker women’s soccer on the map.”
Baker sits with a record of 12-5-4, and is set to play No.5-seeded Martin Methodist College from Pulaski, Tenn. Despite having to play such a highly ranked team, Houser has faith that the Wildcats can make it through the tournament.
“They continue to learn from each game that we play, and as long as we can keep ourselves learning and be positive, we have a chance,” Houser said.
The team will travel to Alabama to play Martin Methodist at 10 a.m. Nov.30 at the Jack Allen Recreation Complex.
