Many students on campus choose to take advantage of Baker’s intramural sports program, a university-funded program that provides free athletic leagues.
However, Director of Multicultural Affairs Silas Dulan, who is in charge of planning and managing the intramural sports program, said the number of students signed up to participate in the kickball league are down.
“For kickball, we have extended sign-up deadlines three times,” Dulan said.
The fall intramural sports include kickball, which continues through Oct. 10, and flag football, which is played from Oct. 24 to Nov. 21.
Dulan said the Student Activities Council is also working with intramurals to try to get a powder puff football game set up on Oct. 22, the Friday before homecoming.
During interterm there will also be a three-on-three basketball tournament, as well as basketball and volleyball leagues in the spring.
Students who sign up to play in the leagues range from those wanting to have fun to extreme players looking to win an intramural championship.
“I play really hard,” sophomore Jake Price said. “I take it super serious, even in co-ed.”
Price’s intramural team played together last year and won the flag football championship. This year, the members have a team goal of winning four championships throughout the year.
“We’re in it to win it,” Price said.
Sophomore Milan Piva plays softball for Baker, however she also participates in intramurals on the side to have a good time and enjoy herself.
“They are fun,” Piva said. “They don’t have to be overly competitive. It’s not all about winning, it’s more about having fun.”
Piva’s team won the kickball championship last year and although she is playing for fun, her team is looking to win back-to-back championships this year.
Students participating in the leagues can help to determine what other intramural sports are offered by giving feedback to Dulan.
“We’re always open for suggestions,” Dulan said.
Intramural information is posted on a bulletin board in Harter Union outside Allen Dining Hall, as well as on a bulletin board in Collins Center.
