On Dec. 1, Baker University Faculty Senate passed a motion to remove the section “Post-tenure Review” from the Faculty Handbook.
At Tuesday’s faculty senate meeting, Provost Randy Pembrook announced that University Academic Council did not pass the motion it received from faculty senate.
Reasoning behind the failed motion was how important a process of review is to maintaining the high standards and progress of Baker.
The original motion came from Ryan Beasley, associate professor of political science. The motion was voted on by secret ballot and 13 votes were cast in favor and four against the motion in December.
“It is important to be continuously improving and wanting to improve as teachers,” Pembrook said about post-tenure review. “If these reviews were not in place, some discussion, which may need to happen, would never take place.”
Other motions from faculty senate concerning changes to the faculty handbook were passed by UAC, including changes about classroom visitations and consultations.
At the last faculty senate meeting of the year, senators passed the deletion of Fundamentals of Public Relations from the course catalog and Oral Communication will now be added to the requirements for communication majors.
Although the work of the general education committee is finished because of faculty senate’s endorsement of the new liberal studies program, the senators recognized the work of the committee during the past three years of searching and creating a new general education program.
“The committee’s work is done,” Erin Joyce, assistant dean of liberal studies, said. “We were put in charge of creating a model, and next year it will be the faculty’s job. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Now we wait to see what happens.”
At the conclusion of the meeting, faculty senate president Tracy Floreani thanked the senators for their hard work and dedication throughout the year. Floreani has served for two years as faculty senate president, and her term will end at the end of the academic year.
