After two consecutive games that went into double overtime, the Baker women’s soccer team only needed regulation to come away with a victory against MidAmerica Nazarene University 2-0 Tuesday at Liston Stadium.
“It was nice to get the job done in regulation time,” junior Ashley Ukena said. “I know all of our legs were extremely tired from the past few games and it was just nice to finally finish our business in regulation.”
The Wildcats lost 1-0 in double overtime Sept. 29 to Avila University on a free kick in the 106th minute of play. They also tied William Jewell College 2-2 Sunday in a double overtime matchup.
In Tuesday’s win over MidAmerica Nazarene, Baker was led by Ukena, who scored one of the team’s two goals in the 12th minute and assisted on the other.
“It was just a through ball from (Baker Orange staff member) Jordan Dolbin,” Ukena said. “It was a perfect ball, and I just got onto it and it was an easy shot into the goal right around the keeper.”
The team’s second goal came on an assist from Ukena to junior Kylie White in the 75th minute allowing the Wildcats to breathe a little easier with a 2-0 advantage.
“I saw Ashley (Ukena) dribbling down the sideline and saw that she was about to cross it, so I made sure that I was in the right spot,” White said. “When I saw it going over Alix’s (Schiraldi) head, I just knew I had to get there. It just felt really good to finally score.”
Junior Maggie Dupes also contributed her sixth shutout of the season in the win for Baker.
Head coach Nate Houser felt the team should have won the game against William Jewell because they controlled possession of the ball for the majority of the game and had more shots on goal.
However, Houser was pleased the team was able to come from two goals behind to tie the game.
“We had the best chances to score in the first half and didn’t,” Houser said. “They were fantastic. (We) sat on them, and (they) imposed themselves and we got two goals. It was fantastic.”
After the win against MNU, the Wildcats are now 2-1-1 in conference play and 7-3-1 overall for the season and will go on the road to play Benedictine College at 5 p.m. Saturday in Atchison.
In last year’s matchup, the Wildcats defeated Benedictine 2-0 at Liston Stadium, with Ukena recording a goal in that match as well.
“I expect us to come out and play,” Houser said. “You know, we have nothing to be on the back foot about; it’s can we go out and pose ourselves on them.”
