Helping to make the search for the future just a bit easier for undecided students, Tuesday’s majors fair brought together professors and students in every discipline Baker University offers.
“Students with an undecided major have so much on their plate,” Kelly Burns, assistant director of the Career Development Center, said. “They are trying to fit in all their classes and pick what they want to do. With this majors fair, it is a convenient way to bring everyone together.”
With a treasure-hunting theme, this is the first majors fair Baker has hosted. Planning for the event began almost a year ago as an idea to help increase retention rates.
The event, which was in Mabee Hall, that created a low-pressure atmosphere allowed the excitement and passion of Baker’s faculty to show.
"The faculty was fabulous," Susan Wade, director of the CDC, said.
Wade helped in organizing the event and sees this as a great opportunity for students who are undecided and do not have a chance at enough exposure in the different majors.Wade helped in organizing the event and sees this as a great opportunity for students who are undecided and do not have a chance at enough exposure in the different majors.

“Some students may be reluctant to make those connections and set up appointments with professors,” Wade said.
The fair was a help to freshman Michael Wilson, who is trying to decide between two different majors.
“I am in between majors, and I wanted to get more information,” Wilson said. “This was a real help. It was nice being able to talk about majors in an informal way. I think it made my decision much easier.”
Knowing how difficult making the decision on a major can be, junior Camron Thissen took a group of residents to the fair to help expose them to different possibilities.
“I am a RA, so I got a group of guys together to come over,” Thissen said. “It is a good opportunity to open your eyes. I know when I was a freshman something like this would have helped.”
After already deciding on a major in sociology, freshman Katie Reed attended the fair to find a minor and explore other majors the college offers.
“I saw a flier for the majors fair and I decided to come and see what it was about,” Reed said. “I already have picked out my major, but I thought this would be a good way to find a minor.”
For students who were not able to attend, the CDC is available to help students connect with faculty in any area of possible interest.
