While many students received the opportunity to go home during spring break, the Baker University baseball team was putting in its time on the baseball diamond at Sauder Field in Baldwin City.

Many of the players did not get the chance to leave campus during the break, but took advantage of the opportunity to improve on the field and become closer teammates off the field.

“We were all able to stay together and just be around each other and find out a lot about each one of our teammates,” senior Josh Reed said.

BU’s first doubleheader after the break was against Ottawa University Tuesday. The team lost game one 13-4, but rebounded in game two with a 16-0 win in five innings.

The ‘Cats played five doubleheaders during the break, going 5-5 in 10 games.

“What I’ve really been impressed with is that we have been playing some errorless baseball,” head coach Phil Hannon said. “I think we’ve only committed two or three errors within all 10 games.”

Baker opened up the 10-game stretch with a sweep of Sterling College. BU won the first game 8-7 and the second game 4-2. The ‘Cats rallied from a 6-0 deficit to win game one in eight innings.

Baker returned to action two days later to play Central Methodist University and stayed hot with a 13-7 win in game one. However, the team dropped game two, 2-0.

BU returned the next day to face Lindenwood University, but lost game one 13-3 and game two 6-0. Baker led game one 1-0 after three innings, but the Lions scored four runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to blow the game open.

The ‘Cats bounced back against Missouri Valley College by sweeping the Vikings. The Wildcats won game one 9-0 behind a complete-game shutout from junior Chris Cummins and then got a good outing from junior Nathan Wheelock in game two for an 8-3 victory.

“I felt good with the Missouri Valley performance,” Cummins said. “As a team, we played really well in both games.”

The Wildcats played the first eight games of the 10-game stretch at home, but played the last two games at Evangel University. Both games were close, but the ‘Cats lost game one, 3-2, and also fell in game two, 6-2.

BU will face Benedictine College in a home and away doubleheader Saturday and Sunday.

The Wildcats will host the first doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sauder Field, and then the action will resume at 1 p.m. Sunday in Atchison.
