The Music Theater Workshop class will perform a free showcase at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 5 in McKibbin Recital Hall for Broadway fanatics, opera die-hards or anyone who simply enjoys live music.
This is the first time the class has been taught by Instructor of Music Marci Ziegler, who has become a full-time faculty member this year.
“Students were allowed to choose solos and duets they liked either from a musical or an opera to perform,” Ziegler said.
Since the class has virtually no budget to purchase props and costumes, students are using items pulled from what they have.
“We do not have a budget and have minimal lights other than what is in McKibbin,” Ziegler said. “This means students will have to express themselves with their bodies. If you did a full production there would be more to expose. With this, though, they do not get to hide behind costumes and props.”
For the nine students in the class, it is an opportunity to display their love of music and theater.
Junior Courtney West joined the class because of her passion for music and theater. She has a major solo and is singing a duet.
“For the duet we are doing ‘Blue Wind’ from the musical ‘Spring Awakening,'” West said. “We went and saw the show and decided it was great music.”
Freshman Katherine Dick, who is also in the workshop, will perform the “Monty Python’s Spamalot” song, “The Song That Goes Like This,” with senior Eli Jones.
“It is combining acting as well as singing, and good humor,” Dick said.
In an attempt to link all the performances together, the class is using an opera with a party scene. After that, the students will combine songs with similar themes, but making each performance their own.
“Each of the group’s numbers contrast from one to another and it is fun to watch the students create their own character or convey a scene,” Ziegler said.
