With the goal of allowing students to gain perspective about views from around the globe, International Education Week was celebrated this week.
It started officially Sunday evening with the Oxfam Hunger Banquet and then Monday the Global Awareness Fair took place.
Cindy Novelo, director of study abroad, international and disability services, said the banquet was a great way to start things off.
“It was wonderful,” she said. “It was really a cool thing to combine our efforts like that.”
Novelo said the fair Monday really sparked some interest around campus.
“The fair gets people going and stirred up about the week,” she said.
An Hour of Silence occurred Tuesday in Harter Union. This event included a speech choir performance and brief presentations by several campus organizations, including FY classes, Mungano and Earth We Are.
Senior Tim Haynes, a member of the speech choir, said he was glad to be a participant in the Hour of Silence activities.
“It was inspiring,” he said. “I felt really proud to be able to participate and make people become educated on what’s going on in the world.”
Senior Rachel Kilian, who was in charge of the Hour of Silence, said she thought some educating of attendees took place.
“It did make an impact,” she said. “For people to say they were learning stuff, that was cool.”
Kilian added that involving the speech choir was smart.
“I thought the speech choir did a really good job,” she said. “It was very informative and at the same time very moving.”
Wednesday marked the beginning of the People-to-People Fair Trade Sale. Also, the international student forum took place Wednesday night along with a lip sync contest, which Mungano sponsored.
Thursday included an international focus during chapel and more of the People-to-People Sale. Thursday Brewsday allowed students to speak with Baker’s international and heritage students.
Novelo said Brewsday is probably her favorite activity, although all the events are fun.
“It’s fun to watch the students interact with each other and get to know each other a little better,” she said. “It’s heartwarming.”
Thursday also included the viewing of the OxFam DVD and an international forum sponsored by Mungano.
Friday marks the last day of the event, with several movies being shown along with more of the People-to-People Sale and a display depicting world responses to the recent presidential election.
