The Baker baseball team collected its first victory of the season after splitting a doubleheader Tuesday against Ottawa University.
Baker lost a tough battle in game one, 13-9. The ‘Cats out-hit the Braves 14-7, but never could tighten the early deficit from Ottawa. Head coach Phil Hannon said his team struggled on a cold day from the mound.
“We scored every inning but two. What happened was we gave up two big innings, but every other inning we scored,” Hannon said. “We just have to know what situation to pitch in.”
Junior Brandon Truitt and freshman Bryce Daily recorded three hits for BU. The Wildcats bounced back in game two to grab their first victory of the 2010 year.
“I’m happy for the guys because they have been playing good baseball so far this year,” Hannon said. “I like how we’re playing.”
Sophomore Nathan Wheelock recorded his first victory on the mound after five innings and eight strikeouts.
BU will play against Mount Mercy College in a four-game series starting at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Sauder Field. <br/>&#160;
