Junior John Babb has a lot on his plate this semester.
Between balancing a full course load, being a member of the Baker University football team and being the Recreation Coordinator for Student Activities Council, Babb has a very busy schedule.
But his role as the President of Mungano has been rewarding.
“The members and the officers have been great,” Babb said.
Babb and members of Mungano have had a busy semester with a Welcome Back Bash, as well as an alumni tailgate in September.
The group has hosted events in conjunction with Silas Dulan, director of multicultural affairs, who has planned events for Native American Heritage Month and Hispanic Heritage Month.
The group also has been busy planning the Nothing But Sweets annual dessert auction that was at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Allen Dining Hall.
Students registered to be candidates for the auction or could register to donate an item for the auction.
The dessert items were auctioned off for the Nothing But Nets campaign, which is a charitable organization that raises awareness and funding to combat malaria in Africa.
The amount raised from the auction was not available at presstime.
“The dessert auction is something we’ve been doing for a few years,” Babb said. “It’s been a very successful event for us, fundraising wise.”
Proceeds from the auction will also assist members of Mungano as they travel to an annual student leadership conference on black student government next semester.
“We hope that it’ll be a great experience for all of our young members, as well as for some of the leaders we have in the group,” Babb said, “and that we’ll gain some valuable leadership skills and that we expose some of our members to an environment that they aren’t necessarily used to … we plan to have about 14 students (attend the conference) if not more.”
Sophomore Kelley Jenkins is one of the students attending the conference in February.
“I wanted to gain experience so I could bring my leadership skills back to the community and our school,” Jenkins said. “Each day we partake in … lectures that you go to. They talk about leadership skills and ways that you can come back and change things at your school. Each night is an event and there are different speakers that come and speak.”
At Tuesday’s Baker University Student Senate meeting, members of Mungao asked for $150 to go toward the conference. The senators suspended the constitution and gave them $300.
