Calling all Baker students, but the question is, do you have enough signal to respond?
With no cell phone company stores in Baldwin City, Baker students are forced to bring their cell phone service providers from home or find a plan that a city in the area offers.
Senior Sarah Laha, Topeka, used T-Mobile in high school and throughout college and has been pleased with the service she’s received.
“I like it,” Laha said. “I don’t have problems really. I think they keep expanding coverage.”
Freshman Chris Sifuentes, Bonner Springs, has used Sprint’s cell phone service for four years.
Sifuentes said he really enjoys his phone’s Internet capabilities but added that his provider has not been perfect.
“The Internet is awesome on the phone but the service actually is not the best,” he said.
Laha said that going to school in Baldwin City does not affect her cell phone signal and her mobile phone is her primary form of phone use for both text messaging and calling.
“I don’t use any other type of phone,” Laha said.
Sifuentes, who moved from Gessner Hall to the Living and Learning Center, said he has had signal problems in his new living quarters but doesn’t believe residing in Baldwin City is to blame.
“I’ve moved to the LLC and had some little problems with it,” he said. “In Baldwin, it’s fine.”
Freshman Adam Vaughn, Garnett, has used T-Mobile as his cell phone provider for two to three years and is satisfied after switching from Alltel.
“I like it much better than Alltel,” Vaughn said. “It’s the best I’ve had so far.”
Freshman Sierra Ronhovde, Elmwood, Neb., has used Alltel for more than two years and generally gets service.
“Just inside buildings, other than that I don’t have too much trouble,” she said, referring to her phone’s signal.
Ronhovde added that Alltel provides the “My Circle” plan plus several other features she appreciates and that save her family a lot of money.
Junior Ryan Burns, Park Hill, Mo., has used Sprint for the last five years and has a little trouble with service in Baldwin City.
“It’s not always the best here in Baldwin, but everywhere else it’s pretty good,” Burns said.
Burns said the problems include dead spots on campus and in the campus apartments that result in losing calls or not getting them altogether on occasion.
Burns said he generally is satisfied with his provider and does not need to make adjustments.
“I like my plan,” Burns said. “I wouldn’t change it.”
Laha said she is a part of her family’s cell phone coverage, but needed to make an adjustment for an increase in the amount of text messaging the plan allows for a particular price.

Sifuentes said he also is on his family’s plan.
“I’m on my parents’ plan,” he said. “It’s not bad at all.”
Laha said although she doesn’t know if her T-Mobile service is the best, she has never thought about switching providers.
“It’s one of those things where if it’s not broken, don’t fix it,” she said.
Although Baldwin City and the Baker campus in general tend to have a few spots with low signal, cell phone service generally is not a problem these students said.
So which cell phone service is the best? You make the call.
