After a 48-14 loss to No. 6 Lindenwood University, the Baker football team bounced back to beat No. 20 Benedictine College 20-14 Saturday in Atchison.
The Wildcats were able to keep the Ravens out of the endzone with a goal-line stand to seal the win.
Along with the goal-line stand to close out the game, the Baker defense made Benedictine turn the ball over five times by forcing and recovering three fumbles and picking off two passes.
“It was probably one of the most intense moments I’ve been in since I have been at Baker,” senior Kyle Weinmaster said. “Knowing that the game was on the line on defense’s shoulders and that if we got the stop we would win the game, and if we didn’t we would get the loss. It was a pretty intense game.”
Junior John Babb led the Wildcats with 146 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Babb scored his touchdown on a 20-yard run with 12:56 left in the fourth quarter to make the score 20-7, after Benedictine had cut Baker’s lead to 13-7 with just less than three minutes left in the third quarter.
Benedictine responded with another touchdown 1:23 later to bring the score to 20-14, but that would be the final score of the game, despite a threat from the Ravens to win the game in the closing minutes.
With Saturday’s victory, the Wildcats improve to 3-4 on the season. BU’s next game is the homecoming game against Graceland University at 2 p.m. Saturday at Liston Stadium.
