A Charlie Brown Christmas teaches us that even the saddest looking tree is perfectly fine with just a little love.
The women of Alpha Chi Omega sorority set out to prove that this week with their very own Charlie Brown Christmas tree.
“It’s really little and kind of scrawny, but we figured that would be perfect,” junior Libby Steele said.
Steele said the organization asked students to decorate the tree with accessories like scarves and gloves Monday through Friday in Harter Union.
Junior Emily Speicher said all donations would be given to the Women’s Transitional Care Services in Lawrence, which offers care and shelter for victims of domestic violence.
Steele said Alpha Chi Omega works closely with the WTCS and thought it would be a good idea to donate warm items for those who may have left them behind in a rush to escape violence.
“A lot of times, they’ll leave with nothing,” she said. “It’s kind of the least we can do.”
Speicher said it’s a good idea to give women at the shelter items to keep themselves, as well as their children, warm, especially since a lot of times they leave with only the clothes on their backs.
Sophomore Krista Yaktine said it would be a nice gesture for those who might not be able to afford the items.
“Everybody every once in a while needs a little help,” she said.
Steele said she suggested having a hat and glove drive for the WTCS, while someone else suggested decorating a sad looking Christmas tree with the items. She said a fellow
Alpha Chi Omega member donated the tree, which is perfect because it’s small and isn’t filled out.
Speicher said her church at home always has a Charlie Brown Christmas tree that members decorate with winter accessories, which is why she thinks it’s a good idea for her greek organization.
This is the first time Alpha Chi Omega has held the event, but she thinks it will prove to be a good way for the whole Baker community to get involved, instead of just one greek organization making donations.
Steele said the sorority probably would do the drive again next year if it goes well.<br/>Speicher said after its first day in the union, the tree already had quite a few items on it, which included hats, gloves and scarves in different colors.Speicher said after its first day in the union, the tree already had quite a few items on it, which included hats, gloves and scarves in different colors.
