Rain washed away the Baker University men’s and women’s cross country teams Saturday by keeping them from competing in their first 5k and 8k’s of the season at the Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo.
Because the meet was canceled, head coach Zach Kindler and the coaches of other universities decided to have a smaller meet Friday at the Baldwin Golf Course.
“Four weeks between races is just too much time, so we threw (the meet) together,” Kindler said. “(I) talked to some coaches down in Joplin and have three other teams coming over.”
The teams that will be racing at Friday’s impromptu meet are the University of Saint Mary, Central Methodist University and Cowley County Community College.
“It’s going to be a pretty small meet, but at the same time, it will be pretty good competition with the teams that will be here,” Kindler said.
Kindler is expecting the teams to be prepared, however he thinks times may be slower.
“The course at Joplin is a much faster course than ours, so time-wise, we probably would’ve ran a little faster than we’re going to run this weekend,” he said.
The women’s race will start at 5 p.m., followed by the men’s race at 5:30 p.m. and will be at the Baldwin Golf Course.
