The Baker University women’s soccer team suffered another loss to Hastings College Tuesday after a heartbreaking defeat last fall during the Fab Four game of the national tournament.
“Even though it is late in the season, we’re still growing and learning, and we have to take that game and learn a lot from it so it doesn’t happen again,” senior Breana Hoener said.
During the first half, the ’Cats had to play against 35 m.p.h. winds.
Hastings took an early lead by scoring in the third minute of the game. After the Broncos scored again in the 18th minute, the Wildcats came back as Baker Orange staff member Jordan Dolbin scored a goal just 30 seconds later.
The Broncos scored once more before halftime, making the score 3-1.
Hastings again was the first to score in the second half, but senior Alix Schiraldi answered with a goal 67 minutes into play. However, the ’Cats were unable to make a complete comeback and lost 4-2.
“In the second half, when we had that advantage, we were able to play a lot of the game within (Hastings’) half and to be fair I thought we carried the game in the second half a bit more than they did,” associate head coach Davy Phillips said.
The Wildcats also got their first tie of the season over fall break with a 2-2 draw against Avila University Oct. 15.
“It’s a game that it is kind of a bitter result because the ladies played so well for such an extended period of time,” Phillips said. “A couple defensive lapses on concentration, clearing our ball out of the final third, just a couple lapses and we found ourselves in a very tight game, and it shouldn’t have been that tight.”
Avila scored first, but the Wildcats evened up the score with a goal by Schiraldi.
In the second half, Avila was the first to score again, but with three minutes left in the game, sophomore Amber Pickering tied up the game with a goal from 25 yards out. Pickering’s goal was the first of her college career.
Despite the tie, Phillips thought BU should have performed better.
“It is the little moments of the game that often make the game. That game was a prime example … we end with a 2-2 draw with a team that we might be better than,” Phillips said.
Baker plays its final home game of the regular season against Benedictine College at 5 p.m. Saturday at Liston Stadium.
“I think the ladies have still put themselves in a really good place (for the season),” Phillips said. “We just need to win from here out and that starts with Benedictine on Saturday.”
