Growing up with brothers is hard enough without a spooky holiday mixed in, but add in Halloween to a love-hate relationship between my brothers and I, and you’ll get one freaked out redhead.
My brothers always scared me by running up behind me and yelling, ‘Boo!’
I’m not a fan of things that scare me, so as you might have guessed, Halloween is not my favorite holiday.
The only thing I liked about Halloween when I was growing up was that I could be a princess or a singer and eat a lot of candy.
To give you some perspective, I was the child who the dentist didn’t particularly care for the day after trick-or-treating due to an abundance of candy.
I was even the child that lost my retainers because I was focused on getting candy.
I know it is gross, but it’s the truth.
Other than stuffing my face with candy and acting somewhat stuck up for the night because I always had myself convinced that I was a legitimate princess, I was a complete daddy’s girl because I was so scared.
When I approached any house that I thought was scary or haunted I would make my dad go with me and hold my hand as tight as he possibly could.
When it comes to being a scaredy-cat I haven’t changed all that much, although I’m pretty sure I’ll be fine without my dad’s hand to hold onto.
I know I probably sound old-fashioned, but sometimes people can take Halloween too seriously.
I understand that it’s Halloween and it is supposed to be scary, but there is a line that shouldn’t be crossed.
Everybody’s opinion of where the line should go is going to be different.
For me the line should be drawn before homeowners put the devil and possessed babies or other possessed objects or beings out on their lawns.
Babies are innocent human beings.
Babies are not supposed to be looked at in that way regardless of the season.
That being said, I do understand the desire to be festive and want to decorate for the season.
There are ways to decorate a house festively and not keep young children from coming to the door to receive candy because the children are too scared.
I would suggest taking a funny approach to Halloween. Don’t make people like me scared, make us laugh. It’s a lot more fun to laugh than to cry.
Every holiday should be fun and exciting for everyone, even if it may result into a trip to the dentist the next day.
