The Baker University women’s basketball team began its season with a 74-51 loss to Kansas Wesleyan University Tuesday in Salina.
“It was definitely a rough game,” senior Rae Lynne Stewart said. “It was a rough team to play … but we definitely have some growing and a lot of potential for the rest of the season.”
Stewart led the team in points with nine, followed by freshman Haleigh Tenpenny who had seven.
The team is fairly inexperienced with six of the 14 members of the team being freshmen. Stewart said despite being freshman, both Shelbi Petty and Kyra Ramsey have stepped up for the start of the season.
“All we had was a scrimmage under our belts and they proved that they definitely have something to offer the team,” Stewart said.
Both women totaled five points each. BU shot 34 percent from the field, however it shot 70.8 percent from the charity stripe and tallied 37 turnovers.
“We really need to cut down on our turnovers,” Stewart said.
The Wildcats will compete at home in the Baker Classic Friday and Saturday.
They will play Northwestern Oklahoma State University at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Rogers State University at 3 p.m. Saturday in Collins Center.
BU also plays Friends University at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Collins Center.
