The Baker University men’s basketball team did not have to worry about pulling off a half-court buzzer-beater to defeat Kansas Wesleyan University in this year’s season opener.
The Wildcats defeated the Coyotes by the score of 102-60 Tuesday in Salina. Baker’s offensive output was 19 points more than its highest point total from last season.
While head coach Brett Ballard was pleased by his team’s performance, he realized the 42-point win was against a depleted Kansas Wesleyan team.
“They were missing two guys that potentially could start for them, so I think it definitely affected them,” Ballard said. “I don’t know how much those guys could have made up for that difference, but it definitely affected them.”
The ’Cats win was a complete team effort as four Wildcats scored in double figures. Junior Ben Steinlage had a team-high 19 points, going a perfect 8-8 from the field. Junior Jordan Honore scored 14 points and sophomore Todd Eils and senior Jack Shortell tallied 12 points each.
BU played its second game against Haskell Indian Nations University Thursday in Lawrence, but results were not available at presstime.
BU will play its home opener against Friends University at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Collins Center.
