Senior Will Duncan won a silver medal at the Kansas Music Teachers Association Collegiate piano auditions Saturday.
Duncan has competed in this competition for the past five years.
He placed third his freshman year, but did not place again until this year.
“I was a little surprised I received a silver medal,” Duncan said. “I go into the competitions with the mind frame that I don’t care because making it seem like a real competition makes me too nervous.”
To be accepted into the statewide competition, Duncan has to submit two pieces that are combined to be no longer than 18 minutes in length with two contrasting style periods.
Duncan’s main reason for going to the competition is to get the feedback from the judges.
“This year I took a piece that is new to me for my senior recital,” Duncan said. “It really helped to have the judge’s feedback to help me improve for my final piece.”
