The Baker University cheerleading squad is hosting a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday at Applebee’s on Sixth Street in Lawrence to help gain funds to attend the national cheer competition in Florida.
Anyone can come to the event, in which there will be crafts to do and Santa Claus will be in attendance for any children present.
To attend the event, in advance, people can purchase a ticket, which costs $5, from any of the cheerleaders for all-you-can-eat pancakes. Attendees can also purchase a ticket at the door.
“We’re trying to get each (cheerleader) to sell 25 tickets, and we get $3 out of the $5 ticket price,” junior Paige Trimble said.
Trimble said it costs about $18,000 for the cheer squad alone to attend the national competition. The cheer squad has several fundraising ideas in mind to help them reach their goal.
Trimble said the team is currently selling items from the group Thirty-One Gifts, which sells “girly” merchandise. The goal is for each team member to sell $300 worth of items. Another fundraiser the team is doing is writing letters to local businesses to donate to the team’s fund to make the trip to nationals.
