Father Brandon Farrar and the Annunciation Catholic Church are reaching out to Baker University Catholic and non-Catholic students by offering a place for fellowship and to workout and study.
“We want the basement of the house the church bought to be more like a home away from home for students of every denomination, but especially for Catholic students,” Farrar said.
The house, 609 8th St., is Farrar’s home. He wants students to take advantage of the amenities the basement offers.
The basement will have workout equipment, television, games, laundry, a kitchenette and studying tables.
“The basement addition to the spiritual life at Baker is great,” University Minister Ira DeSpain said. “Every religious group on campus collaborates and doesn’t compete. The Annunciation Catholic Church’s basement ministry will add a lot to the university.”
The opening and remodeling of the basement is one of many things to come for Catholic students on Baker’s campus.
“Students can come in the basement to get things done or just (for) fellowship with other students,” Farrar said.
The house was remodeled so that students could enter the basement without having to go through the main portion of the house.
“The opening of the basement gives students a central location for Catholic students on Baker’s campus,” senior Molly Schmeidler said. “This is a great step to having more Catholic campus activities on campus.”
After the remodel is completely finished, there are hopes there will be a fellowship night once a week when students will cook dinner together followed by watching a movie or doing homework.
In the future there might be interns staying in the house as well.
Farrar hopes to eventually have interns stay in the house to receive the experience of ministering to college students so they can relate to people closer to their own age.
“I’m excited to explore the possibilities that this new ministry will give Baker,” Schmeidler said.
