The Baker University softball team has not started its 2012 season, but head coach Matt Windle has already signed six players to the Wildcats’ 2012-2013 recruiting class.
“We’re looking to keep building and to fill holes from students we will be losing to nursing school and student teaching,” Windle said.
The Wildcats will not only be losing starting pitchers Maggie Holmberg and Erin Greenwood, who plan to attend nursing school next year, but will also be losing their catchers as well.
“(MaKayla Greeve) is someone I’ve been recruiting for a while and she’s a great catcher and a pretty good overall hitter,” Windle said. “So, she will definitely be competing for a starting spot.”
Other signees include Frankie Farrant, Ilona Miller and Mallorie Nelson.
Pitcher Brittany Vollenwieder’s twin sisters, Cari and Kelsi Vollenwieder, have also signed letters of intent to play softball for Baker.
Windle said he is also looking to sign another set of twins from California as well as a couple pitchers from a junior college.
The Wildcats are ranked third in the preseason Heart of America Athletic Conference Coach’s poll and received one vote for first in conference. The team had an overall record of 31-21 and a 13-7 conference record in the 2011 season.
