The Sam Spady program, an alcohol awareness program about a student at Colorado State University who died from alcohol poisoning, was hosted Monday by the Baker University Panhellenic Council for new greek life members.
“There were no less than 55 people who [Spady] came into contact with that night who witnessed what was going on,” Jennifer Letner, fraternity and sorority life coordinator, said.<br/>
The program began with background information about Spady and went through a timeline of her day. Each student in the room was given a color-coded card to identify someone from Spady’s day.
“By the time the timeline is done, everyone in the room knows what part they played,” Letner said.
The person who was Spady put on vision and judgment impairing goggles and attempted to do activities at different points throughout the story.
“Realistically, we’re not going to stop underage drinking, but from the 55 people that saw [Spady] that night, it would only have taken one (person) to call for medical attention,” Letner said.
Spady’s family started the awareness organization and eventually paired with the national Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. The women of the Baker University Zeta Tau Alpha chapter requested to share the program with the rest of Baker’s greek community.
“There were six different programs we could have chosen but we chose the one that is best suited for a large group,” Letner said. “It’s mostly about recognizing signs and symptoms.”
