The Baker University bowling team will be going into sectionals after placing 15th out of 50 teams Saturday and Sunday in the Backhaul Direct Hoosier Classic in Indianapolis.
“This tournament was the biggest tournament of the year volume-wise, with 330 women participating in the tournament,” head coach Cheryl Keslar said.
On Saturday, the team finished the day in 13th place.
Keslar said Baker was ahead of three or four teams that were ranked in the top 10 in the nation.
Junior Caitlin Campbell and freshman Carly Schmidtlein finished the day in the top 15 Saturday.
“Being a freshman, finishing 13th was huge for Carly,” Keslar said.
Sunday, the team dropped two stops in the rankings.
Keslar said BU had some issues, starting with two of their starters being sick and bowling on a different oil pattern Sunday than on Saturday.
“The girls that are not starters stepped up when Chloe Mercer and Brittany Barker got sick,” Keslar said.
Going into the tournament in Indianapolis the team was ranked No. 43.
“I’m feeling great going into sectionals because we have proven that we can hang with the top-rated teams, “ Keslar said. “We don’t have to beat the best teams to make it through sectionals; all we have to do is make the top four. The only question is ‘are we too young of a team?’”
