After a weekend off due to postponed matches resulting from snow, the Baker University men’s and women’s tennis teams traveled March 6 to Overland Park for matches against Johnson County Community College.
The women’s team came up a match short of defeating JCCC, losing 5-4. After being shut out by Rockhurst University in its opening matches, the men’s team lost to the Cavaliers 8-1.
“We’ve been playing lots of matches against each other in practice which is important,” Griggs said. “We’ve done some specific drills but having lots of match play is the best experience we can get.”
Baker’s next conference matchup is March 17 against Missouri Valley College at Laury Tennis Courts.
“Our goal as a team is to compete at a higher level than we have in the past,” Griggs said. “As the captain, I’m also focusing on working on our mental game.”
Both the men and women will head to New Orleans over spring break for matches against Loyola University New Orleans and Louisiana College.
“I think we’re all excited and it will give us a chance to see some other competition because we play a lot of the same schools every year,” Griggs said.
