Most college students would agree that they are not all that happy about the cost of higher education.
Not only is the final price tag for tuition, room and board, meal plans and books already a steep fee to pay at institutions of higher education across the nation, but the cost for each continues to rise on an annual basis.
Baker University, of course, is no different. Tuition will soon see a 6.8 percent increase.
Students here are unlikely to be ecstatic about this hike in the annual cost of their education, but before throwing a tantrum and declaring war on the university, students should take the time to recognize the good that comes from the increase.
The tuition increase will go toward bringing new faculty to the university, help pay its employees on a level competitive with other universities and will help Baker to maintain its facilities.
Students should be able to take each of these factors into consideration and appreciate that their hard-earned money is truly going toward making their higher education experience the best it can be.
Since students often will admit that two of the best things about Baker are the student-teacher ratio and the accessibility of professors.
The university takes great pride and puts forth great effort to hire faculty who are compatible with Baker’s values and environment. More money to hire more professors with these qualities means more happy students.
Secondly, after the university hires these wonderful professors, it needs to be able to pay them a competitive salary. It doesn’t matter how much an educator loves his or her students if he or she can’t afford to support the family at home.
Lastly, another great attraction for prospective students, current students and alumni are Baker’s beautiful campus and facilities.
Without continuous funding, the university would no longer be able to provide everyone with such a picturesque scene as they walk to class everyday or the materials needed once they get there.
All things considered, even students who hate paying more money for tuition should be able to agree that they’re getting their money’s worth.
