Taylor’s Top 10 – Halloween DIY

Get out your scissors and put on your thinking caps because it’s the best time of the year — Halloween. As college students, it’s hard to find the money to spend on a well-made Halloween costume, but it isn’t that hard to make your own. It just takes some creativity and time.

Here are some easy Halloween costumes that you can do yourself. (Sorry guys, I’m not an expert on men’s Halloween costumes, but feel free to use some of these ideas to spark your own ideas, or if you’re feeling brave, just wear it!)

1. Ghost

Before you rag on me for giving the most boring and basic costume idea in the world, SLOW YOUR ROLL. You’re a college student. You’re poor and you don’t have time to make a costume, so take off your bed sheets, take a pair of scissors, and cut some eye sockets out. Not only is it easy, it’s cheap.

2. Mummy

Again with the dirty looks… it’s not as bad as it sounds. Take that same bed sheet that you decided not to use as a ghost costume and make slits along the bottom edge every few inches and then rip the rest of the way. Next, brew some iced tea and soak the ripped pieces in it and then dry them. After that, all you have to do is wrap them around yourself and keep them in place with safety pins. The longer the strands, the easier it will be to keep it on.

3. Homeless Person

Easy: go crazy at the Salvation Army and wear as many colors and layers as possible. Don’t brush your teeth or shower for a week, either.

4. Minion, from Despicable Me

Find some overalls, a yellow shirt and some goggles and you’re good to go. Just make sure to look over the  Minion wiki page to brush up on your Minion language.

5. Mario & Luigi

For this one, you need those same overalls and a best friend. After you decide who is who, wear a T-shirt with your respective color. Next you’ll need a hat of the same color, with a white circle (cut out of construction paper) with your respective initial on it.

6. Holidays

That’s what I’m doing this year. Pick your favorite holiday (mine is Christmas) and wear everything festive! I’m going to bust out my Santa hat, Christmas socks, colored lights necklace and go as “Christmas.” This one is easy if you’re as festive for all holidays as I am — plus, it’s just a little ironic.

7. Miss Peacock, in the library, with the rope

I love this one because it’s so easy. Pick whichever “Clue” character you want to be and wear a dress in that color (Miss Scarlet, red, Miss Peacock, blue, etc.) Then, pick your weapon (rope would be easiest) and choose your place by making a little card that looks like one from the board game.

8. Pikachu

Get a plain yellow T-shirt and make a yellow tutu. To make the tutu, fit a piece of elastic waistband around your waist and tie strips of yellow tulle to the waistband. The more you have, the puffier it will be. Out of construction paper and a headband, make yellow ears. Also paint your nose and cheeks red.

9. Cat

Black leotard, black cat ears and a black tail (the last two can be found at the dollar store). Use eyeliner to draw on whiskers and a nose.

10. Eve

Go to Walmart or Home Depot and buy as much fake foliage as you can. Wrap it around yourself and call yourself Eve. Better yet, find yourself an Adam and go as a couple.
