Review: The Walking Dead

The season four mid-season finale of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” left fans with a lot of unanswered questions.

After the bloody-showdown with the governor and the prison left in ruins, fans were left to wonder what would happen to the survivors. After a long wait, “The Walking Dead” returned on Feb. 9, with episode nine, “After.” This episode focused on Rick, Carl & Michonne and how they are dealing with life after the prison.

I expected there to be a lot more excitement during this episode and for a lot more information about the characters to be exposed. Most of the episode focused on Carl, who places the blame on his father, Rick, for what happened at the prison. Although it wasn’t exciting to watch Carl wander around and try to survive on his own, it played an important role to the plot. We see Carl go through emotions of anger and fear as he battles walkers and tries to find more supplies. Facing the reality of his father’s possible death, he realizes he was completely wrong about being able to do these things alone. Fans see Carl grow as a character and also see the father-son relationship strengthen.

Michonne has always been the mysterious character that fans don’t know much about. During a flashback-dream sequence, we see that previously Michonne was a pretty normal woman, which comes as surprise. We learned that her husband and brother were turned into walkers toward the beginning of the zombie apocalypse, and that she also had a child who was killed. It was good to see a different, more emotional side of Michonne and learn about her past.

However, as the first episode back from the mid-season finale, I was disappointed that we didn’t get to see Daryl or any of the other survivors from the prison. The ending was one of my favorite parts, because throughout the episode Michonne tried to track Rick and Carl. Finally, as Rick and Carl are sitting in the living room there comes a knock on the door, and who is it but Michonne. Hopefully the next few episodes provide more answers to how the characters will live their lives “After” the prison.
