Men’s soccer advances to second round
Men’s soccer wrapped up a three-win Saturday for Baker University athletic teams at Liston Stadium with a 2-0 victory over Wiley College in the opening round of the NAIA national tournament.
Baker and Wiley remained scoreless after the first half of play. In the 55th minute of the game, senior Amer Didic headed the ball in, putting Baker up 1-0. Didic was recently named the 2015 Heart Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year.
In the 74th minute of play, Andrew Miller scored an insurance goal for the ‘Cats. Baker had 13 shots while holding Wiley to only five.
Ryan Emme made four saves for Baker’s 13th shutout of the season. As a team, Baker ranks second in the NAIA for shutouts this season.
Baker will advance to face No. 14 Columbia College in the second round of the tournament on Tuesday, Dec. 1, in Delray Beach, Florida.
Columbia is making its first national tournament appearance since 2012. Columbia defeated Ashford University in the opening round, making it 18-3-0 on the season.
2013 was the last time the Baker Wildcats made it to the final site of the NAIA national tournament. Last season the ‘Cats lost in the first round to No. 1 ranked Rio Grande.
