Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star change the makeup game

Story by Will Hanson, Arts and Entertainment Editor

Popular Youtube creators Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star have collaborated to release a makeup collection inspired by Dawson and his content. Star’s company, Jeffree Star Cosmetics released the Shane Dawson Conspiracy collection earlier today. Website activity was so large at launch that Star’s website ceased to function, when functionality returned, majority of the collection completely sold out.

On Aug. 1, 2018 Dawson released a video on his YouTube channel titled “The Secret World of Jeffree Star” in which Star shows Dawson the reality of his life. “The Secret World of Jeffree Star” series became instantly successful, becoming a five-part series on Dawson’s channel, and served as a means for people to forgive Star for offensive comments he had made in the past.

In episode four titled “The Secret Life of Jeffree Star” Star and Dawson discuss the steps of creating a makeup collection and what Star does when releasing a new product.

Following the success of their first series, Star and Dawson then proceeded to film a follow-up series, one that captures the process of Dawson’s make up collaboration with Star.

Despite having begun filming in Feb. the first episode of the second series entitled “The Beautiful World of Jeffree Star” was released on Oct 1.

The first episode served as Dawson’s official introduction into the beauty community, with each of the following episodes focusing on a specific aspect of the creation of the makeup collection.

Star claims that nothing like their series has been done before, as most makeup companies are normally secretive about their creation processes, financial figures, business techniques, etc.

Dawson and Star gave viewers an in-depth view of nearly every step that goes into releasing a makeup collection from inception to release.

The series’ central focus is the process that Star and Dawson go through, but Dawson is sure to include the struggles faced by fellow Youtuber, Morgan Adams, the younger sister of Dawson’s fiancée, Ryland Adams.

Dawson includes Morgan’s struggling with feeling rejected by the Youtube and beauty community for not being “rich” or “pretty” enough. Morgan speaks how she never felt like changing her body through body modification until she moved to Los Angeles and became a popular content creator.

In episode five of the series, Dawson asks for Star’s help in talking to Morgan about what she is going through, struggling with beauty brands and beauty influencers treating her poorly. Star does not hesitate going to Morgan’s defense.

On Oct 29, Dawson and Star officially announced the Conspiracy Collection in the sixth episode of their second series together.

The designs, names, and shades are all hand-picked by Dawson and Star to represent the past and present of Dawson. Some of the eye-shadow names are “Ranch,” “Tanacon,” “Trisha,” “Cheeto Dust,” “Food Videos” and more like them, all of which are significant to Dawson and his brand.

Despite Dawson admitting a fear of a lack of selling, the Conspiracy Collection is set to be one of the largest makeup launches for Star’s brand. Star revealed that the order for Dawson’s collection would be the largest purchase order for his company.

On top of co creating and financing the product with Dawson, Star also aided in creating a new merch line for Dawson through his company “Killer Merch.”

As said by Star in the sixth episode of the “The Beautiful World of Jeffree Star,” Dawson’s new merch site sold out within the first 30 minutes of launch. The launch of Dawson’s new merch alone was larger than the launch of Star’s summer collection “Jawbreaker.”

While the collection will be available for purchase on Star’s website, Star and Dawson also made a deal with Morphe for a joint release. The collection will solely be available through Star’s website or through Morphe stores. Star has worked with Morphe on his past products, as he believes it is a company that he can trust with his products.

The Conspiracy Collection contains the Conspiracy Palette, the Mini Controversy Palette, six liquid lip shades, one lip gloss, mirrors, makeup bags, tracksuits, and more.

The entire Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star Conspiracy Collection is available now at Jeffree Star Cosmetics. Despite majority of the collection being sold out, a restock will happen in the near future. All current episodes of the series are currently available on Dawson’s Youtube Channel.
