Are you tired of seeing everyone walking down the street holding hands and in love? Or reminded of why you stay single with every pda moment on campus? If this is your first, second, or even third Valentine’s Day alone, look no further, as I have the perfect guide for you if you’re spending this holiday by yourself… again.
Once every year, partners celebrate with each other by exchanging gifts, chocolates, or grand gestures to show off to lonely people like you! No matter how long or how great the relationship is between a pair, it’s the unspoken rule that you must spoil the other on this day to show how much you really care for them. I’m always shocked to find out who around me has been dating for years because they never would’ve made it known otherwise.
So as for that, I have gathered some research on how veteran singles spend this holiday so that they don’t waste one minute thinking about how unlucky their love life is.
First, and arguably the best, is to treat yourself to something you’ve been wanting. It could be a solo coffee date, new clothes, or that new video game you’ve been eyeing. No one has ever proved that retail therapy is a negative or ineffective form of coping, so why not go on a budgetless shopping spree? Just don’t forget to remind yourself that money always comes back, especially if it’s simply just investing in yourself to be hotter for your nonexistent partner; or your future one if you’re optimistic.
The next idea I have for you is to get together with your friends and have a galentines party. You can dress up cute, take pictures, and feast on snacks and candy! Then finish the night by watching some of my favorite rom coms: How to lose a Guy in Ten Days, 10 Things I Hate About You, or Anyone but You. Just make sure to have the tissues ready if sappy romances trigger your lonesomeness.
The last thing I have for you, and no it isn’t to text your ex, is to spend your time around people who love you. Whether that’s platonic love, friendship, yourself or family. Go on a picnic with your siblings or play some golf with dad to show them that time with family is love as well. But don’t forget how important it is to find true self love and acceptance on your journey of being single.
I hope you’ve taken the time to consider celebrating this day with my suggestions instead of with a pint of Ben and Jerry’s on the sofa. I’d like to remind whoever is reading this that love comes in many forms, whether that is a loving friend who you can always count on or a parent who has always supported you through every phase of your life. Be present on this day and remember that you don’t need a partner to make you happy.
