Students gathered on Tuesday to participate in SAC Thrift Night. Students had the opportunity to drop clothes off from 11-1 pm in the Union. If students donated clothes, they got a ticket, giving them priority in choosing clothes later that night. The second portion of the event was hosted from 6-7:30 in the Union. Students with tickets had first picks, but the event was available for all students to participate in. Thrift night was hosted by the Student Activities Council, with the help of Baker’s Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. Zeta Tau Alpha, or ZTA, helped as part of their March service event. SAC hosts many campus wide activities that bring students out to meet one another. Events such as Grocery Bingo, Finals Frenzy, and Wingstop Wednesday are among students’ favorites. Thrift Night was hosted last year, and was popular among students. Because of the success of last year’s event, Seniors Julie Coffey and Johnny Ruiz advocated for SAC to host Thrift Night again this spring.
Tuesday night went beyond finding new pieces for students’ wardrobes. Kaitlyn Lingle, a member of Zeta Tau Alpha, says she hopes students can find clothes that they can enjoy without having to pay the cost. “Thifting can be so expensive to find certain things,” she said. Gavin Curless, director of student life at Baker, explained that the event provides structure while allowing students to interact with each other in a unique way. “It gives an opportunity to find some pretty cool clothes that you may have never found, but then also maybe meeting somebody that you wouldn’t have had a chance to meet,” he says. Clothes were laid out on multiple tables, as well as a rack for dresses and coats. It is estimated that students brought in between two and four hundred items of clothing to the event. Clothes left over will be brought to The Willow, a domestic violence support center in Lawrence, Kansas. Any pieces not taken by the domestic violence center will be donated to thrift stores in the area.
