Avila University earned its first conference win of the season Thursday slipping by the Baker University men’s basketball team 92-87 in Kansas City, Mo.
BU shot 58 percent from the field, the team’s best shooting percentage of the season; however, it was not enough to overcome Avila’s effort from behind the arc. The Eagles scored 36 points off of 3-pointers, 12 of which came off the hands of freshman Trey Bales. The six-foot guard led all scorers with 20 points off the bench.
Freshman Javeion Gray led the Wildcats in scoring with 18 points, while fellow freshman Tyrome Parker chipped in 17. BU found its way to the free-throw line 44 times during the contest, but the team shot 66 percent from the stripe.
With the loss, Baker dropped its fourth straight game and fell to 2-4 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. The Wildcats are now 8-9 overall, but will look to improve on Saturday against No. 5 Evangel University.
The Crusaders are 5-0 in conference play and 14-3 on the season. The HAAC matchup is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Collins Center.
