The Student Activities Council (SAC) has kicked off the school year with a variety of events designed to bring students together, create memories, and keep campus life exciting. Already, new Baker University students have had the chance to experience grocery bingo, Kobe Day, headphone disco, and more. Just this past week, SAC featured Pancake Day and Lego Bingo, all while keeping the fun going during Family Weekend and the first home football game.
On Tuesday, Sept. 9, the SAC kicked off the week with Pancake Day in the Harter Union Lobby. Students were treated to different kinds of pancakes, some with chocolate chips, and some featuring playful designs. SAC President Julie Coffey shared her thoughts on the event:
“I loved pancake day. I think other people loved it too. Our SAC members had a great time making them.”
To start Parents Weekend on Friday, Sept. 12, SAC hosted a special bingo night, a fun spin on the classic game with a Lego theme. When asked about the switch from the infamous grocery bingo, Vice President of Marketing Connor Olson said:
“We always want to try and kind of mix things up. We don’t want students to ever get bored of grocery bingo. Gavin, [Curless, Baker’s Director of Student Life] thought it would be funny to pivot and do a full Lego theme … throwing some spice into the mix.”
While the turnout was not as busy as grocery bingo earlier in the year, there was still a crowd filling up most of the cafeteria.
Spirit Coordinator, Parker Hurla added his perspective, saying, “I love bingo nights. It’s so exciting and competitive, and the prizes are always great. I finally won for the first time last year…. I mean, I peaked there in life.”
His comments highlight how events like bingo not only provide entertainment but also a sense of accomplishment and tradition.
On Saturday, Sept. 13, SAC set up at the football tailgate, featuring games, prizes and the iconic giant inflatable chair. While the game didn’t go in the Wildcats’ favor, the tailgate had a large turnout.
Olson reflected on SAC’s mission: “It’s really rewarding to be able to put on these events where it is a safe space for people to get away from school, college, or work; they can come and have a good time with their friends and not really have to worry about that stuff.”
Coffey, Olson and Hurla all encourage more students to get involved, with Hurla saying, “It’s a great way to meet new people, make connections and be involved in the school. If you have an idea, be sure to stop and talk to Gavin or someone on the executive board and recommend it.”
With plenty of events still ahead, SAC is ensuring there’s always something for students to enjoy. To stay in the loop, follow them on Instagram @bu_sac and never miss a chance to join the fun. You won’t want to miss some of the upcoming events, as well as returning fan favorites.
