Mya Dunn is only the second student in Baker University’s history to direct a show for Baker Theatre, following the first student director, Olivia Harms, who graduated from Baker in May 2024. Mya will be directing the upcoming show for Baker’s theatre program, ‘Almost Maine’.
She has been a part of Baker’s theater program for four years, and before that, she was involved in theater her whole high school career.
Even though she has been involved with theater for the past eight years, her focus was not always solely on theater. In fact, her performing arts journey started in elementary school with a strong interest in singing. Over the years, she participated in a singing program, a band, and then finally found her home in her high school theater program.
For clarification, a director plays an essential role that stays behind the scenes in any show.
“A director runs rehearsals and helps actors break down the lines that they have on their script, really delving into who their character is, what their goals are, what their dislikes are, what their likes are,” Dunn said.
Being a student director is not only an honor, but it is also a gateway to future career opportunities for students. Having experience directing a show before graduating from college provides a significant advantage when searching for jobs outside of school. Mya briefly explained what directing a show has taught her so far.
“It teaches you leadership experience,” she said. “It teaches you to see outside the picture.”
