When it comes to senior quarterback Truman Juelsgaard, football has always been about family, growth and the relationships built along the way. Juelsgaard, of Lawrence, Kan., has been playing football since he was 8 years old. Growing up, sports were always a part of his life.
“Growing up I have always had a ball in my hand,” Juelsgaard said. “What led me to playing sports was my parents, and it was a place where I could socialize.”
During his time at Baker, Juelsgaard said some of his most memorable moments came from the support from his teammates and from those supporting the Football program. .
“The moment that stands out to me the most is seeing the support that Baker puts in for their athletes,” Juelsgaard said. “Also winning back-to-back Heart championships and celebrating with my teammates and family.”
Juelsgaard said he experienced personal transformation both as an athlete and as a person.
“I was a 19-year-old kid who had no clue what was going on and was just along for the ride. Sports didn’t only make me a better athlete, but it made me a better person,” he said. “I have grown into a whole new person.”
For the quarterback, the relationships built with his teammates have been one of the most meaningful parts of his experience.
“They are my second family,” Juelsgaard said. “I will do anything for any one of these guys because we have been through thick and thin, and they would all do the same for me. Coach [Regalado] has had the biggest impact on my life because he hasn’t only helped me as an athlete but [also in] becoming a man,” Juelsgaard said.
Juelsgaard said it has been meaningful to step into a leadership role for the younger players on the roster. His message to younger teammates is simple: be fearless and give full effort.
“Give 120% at everything you do and don’t be afraid to fail,” he said. “Go take it. Don’t sit back and let it come to you because it isn’t coming unless you go take it.”
After graduation, Juelsgaard plans to continue his education and remain involved with the program.
“I plan on getting my master’s and coming back to coach on the staff,” Juelsgaard said.
Looking back on his time in a Baker uniform, Juelsgaard hopes he will be remembered for the effort he brought to the field every time he played.
“I’ve been blessed by the Lord above,” he said. “It’s been a bunch of boys being boys who are serious about getting their degree and winning football games while having a lot of fun.”
