Josh King, a Senior bowler, has been bowling for six years. For the Lawrence native, he said his journey into competitive bowling began with a mix of personal interest and inspiration from a popular online video.
“I’ve always enjoyed bowling, and a Dude Perfect trick-shot video pushed me to join the team in high school,” he said.
That decision ultimately led to a collegiate career that he doesn’t define by highlight or stats, but by his shared success with his teammates. defined not by a single highlight, but by shared success with teammates.
“The moments that stand out most are the matches where everything clicked,” King said. “Competing alongside guys I’ve built strong relationships with and representing Baker in those moments is something I’ll always remember.”
Over the course of his career, King said his perspective on success has changed, especially when it comes to the importance of team camaraderie. He also emphasized the discipline required to compete at the collegiate level.
“Being a college athlete comes with doing a lot of mundane and repetitive work, more than people think,” he said. “Consistency is one of the most undervalued skills to have.”
For King, the team experience has been a pillar to his time at Baker.
“It’s meant everything,” he said. “This team gave me a sense of belonging and a group of guys I could grow with. The relationships and experiences I’ve gained here are something I’ll carry with me long after college.”
King described the program’s culture as both competitive and supportive, while also holding each other accountable.
“Everyone wants to win, but we also genuinely want each other to succeed,” he said. “It’s a culture built on hard work and having each other’s backs.”
As he prepares to graduate, King said finishing his career brings a sense of fulfillment. After graduation, King plans to pursue a career in finance.
“I know I spent a lot of time with the program, so ending my career as a senior without many complaints makes me feel lucky,” he said.
